Theatre Songs & Plays That Transform Kids into Performers

Simple, two-scene plays that work in any space. No theatre experience needed.

I've watched it so often: a quiet child steps into a character, finds their voice, and suddenly lights up with the realization that they can be anyone and do anything! All by integrating theatre arts into your curriculum.

Celebrating effort over perfection

  • Kinder in the Garden

It about how the “wheels on the bus” go off their track skipping, hopping away. Older kids—and the kindergartner—try to figure out the reason: is kindergartner too old for rhymes now? Does he/she need a new ride? If so, what new ride would be best. Then they conclude, as a group, it’s not about rhymes. The wheels on the bus fell off their track because the kindergartner is ready for a double-decker bus.

  • Whistler Park

It's about two cowboys (or cowgirls) who have the chance to head over to Whistler Park where they can ride and whistle till way past dark. Yippee I aye, Yipee I oh, the two banter back and forth about the animals they’ll see and how they love nights like these. Whistling music and how to purchase a whistle are included.

  • Getting Started

Choose Your Space: Living room, backyard, classroom corner, anywhere kids feel comfortable.

Watch Video Together First: Then go through script, talk about characters, let kids ask questions.

    Come Up with Your Plan:

    Kinder in the Garden:
Decide if you want to make the props: a bus, stop sign and printouts of the cars? Or do you and your children want to pretend props are there, e.g., a special chair could be the bus; the stop sign could be a coat rack or house plant, toy cars or hand-drawn pictures of cars could be used.

    Whistler Park:
Decide if you want to wear cowboy hats or pretend? Decide if you want to add your own whistle music by purchasing one here.

Practice Singing Parts: So, it will be easier to sing along with during your performance.

Focus on Fun: Celebrate effort over perfection, encourage creativity, make it joyful—as you plan, practice and perform!
